Like-Minded

Like-Minded meets in the LOFT every 1st Saturday from 930a-1130a with the goal of inspiring and motivating young innovators to pursue their dreams with integrity and passion. Upon arrival, participants had the unique opportunity to hear from some of today’s most influential young leaders, like Keven Stirivant (Team Coach for LRG), Justin Sapp (Speaker, Co-Founder of Like Minded), and Kameron Peraud (Co-Founder Like Minded).

They believe that an online network is essential for daily progress and growth. However, they also understand that there is nothing more powerful than community, and the act of intentionally gathering to better oneself. The energy, focus, and physical nature of Like Minded’s gatherings are one of a kind, infusing fundamental actions with spirituality and determination. Participants had no choice but to leave empowered, encouraged, and connected. Some others who attend are Alana Dawn of Lady Art, Marcie Benjamins of Store 13, Fabian Pallares of Ayidya Collective Change, DJ PGXIII from LRG, Sumo Yoon from Truck Norris, Sean Sapigao from Raw Kulture Clothing, and more.

Art Walk – LÁ RAW by Los Angeles Rawwater

LÁ RAW by Los Angeles Rawwater presents their very first gallery show. Rawwater is the brainchild of Efehi Ogbebor and Kaymar Haye, both who are Cal Poly Pomona Alumni. They felt their views and opinions were missing in the world of fashion. They created the LÁ RAW magazine and LÁ RAW apparel.

“LIFE is that existence that is given to man to live for a purpose, to live to his own satisfaction and pleasure”.
“DEATH is the end of all life in the individual or the thing; if physical, the crumbling of the body into dust from whence it came. He who lives not uprightly, dies completely in the crumbling of the physical body, but he who lives well, transforms himself from that which is mortal, to immortal.” -Marcus Garvey

PlanetZaya Filming with Musician Caleb Quaye

Elton John & Caleb Quaye

I received a call from cinematographer Jonathan Pascual from PlanetZaya about filming a musician in the Loft. He and his crew, including Emmy Award winning producer, Valerie Tucker rolled through for a two camera shoot. They even brought a jib.

They brought Caleb Quaye, his Stratocaster and a small Marshall amp. Caleb has a worldwide reputation as a signature lead guitar player since the late 60’s and early 70’s. He is known most notably as Elton John’s original lead guitarist having played on all the “early stuff”, as well as numerous studio sessions for many other name artists, such as Harry Nilsson, Beach Boys, Mick JaggerJoan Baez, Al Kooper, David Foster, John Klemmer, Eddie HendersonDusty Springfield, Liza Minnelli, Brenda Russell, Ralph McTell, Pete Townsend, The Troggs, Hall & Oates.

Caleb is working on a documentary project to coincide with his recent book, telling his story and the history made throughout the years working with music legends.

Karl Benjamin Mural

Our daughter Brooklyn (7), helping artist David Flores with some touch up painting

Visitors ask us all the time about the mural across the street from the Loft. I spot kids walking by it, snapping pictures with their phone. Most of them do not know the significance of the mural or Karl Benjamin was.

The mural, depicting famed artist Karl Benjamin (who recently passed away), was a brainchild of Andi Campognone and Alex Couwenberg, who brought together artist David Flores and the Pomona Arts Commission to create something remarkable for our neighborhood.

Enjoy the short documentary by Hollywood independent filmmaker and photographer Eric Minh Swenson as he tells the story.

September 8th Art Walk

We are honored to have two of Claremont Graduate School’s prized students showing in this month’s Art Walk.

The 2nd Saturday Art Walk is September 8, 2012 and is a monthly event.

Jackie Bell is showing an Installation made of metal and string. The piece explores the notion that a masculine environment can be balanced by adding the feminine. See Jackie’s post about the piece.

Dominique Ovalle‘s paintings are vibrant and full of color and texture. She pulls inspiration from her travels to India as well as the salty oceans of Malibu, incorporating her spiritual passions within each piece.

“Still Project” Video Shoot

We were contacted by Jonathan & Carrie Pascual of PlanetZaya about shoot a promo for their upcoming film “Still”, a full feature length documentary film woven together using the stories of families who have suffered the loss of a baby to pregnancy or infant loss. August 1, 2012 marks the 10th anniversary of the birth of the Pascual’s first child, Elena Rebekah. Elena was stillborn on August 1, 2002 at 21 weeks gestation. Since Elena’s death, Jonathan and Carrie have used their grief and experiences to help other grieving parents on this long dark road of pregnancy and infant loss.

In 2006, Jonathan left his desk job to enter the world of film making. He and Carrie then created their own film making company; Planet Zaya. Their company is named after their now 7-year old son, Isaiah. Isaiah was also born premature after Carrie spent months on bed rest, but is now a healthy growing young boy. View pictures below of Isaiah and our daughter Brooklyn hanging out on the fire escape at the LOFT.
